Nicolas Cage
Born on January 7th 1964 in Long Beach California USA, Nicolas cage made a name for himself during the eighties by appearing in a wide variety of classic roles.
Cage started off with a part in Fast Times at Ridgemont High which did not go well. Disillusioned, Cage accepted a job at the Fairfax Theater but ended up reading lines with auditioners for Francis Ford Coppola, who happens to be his Uncle. This got him parts in Rumble Fish and Valley Girl. His performance in these movies launched his official career as an actor. Mostly known for his own brand of method acting, this trademark landed him in many successful movies like the Cotton Club, and Face/Off, The Rock and the Disney blockbuster National Treasure.
In Captain Corelli's Mandolin, he plays Captain Antonio Corelli, an army captain from Italy with a passion for music and a lover of life. Slowly he falls for the charms of Pelagia, but their relationship is destined to be torn apart by the war.
Penélope Cruz
Born in Madrid on April 28th 1974, Penelope Cruz studied classic ballet for over 9 years after which she was privately tutored by a range of well known dancers. At age 15 she won a talent agencies audition over hundreds of other applicants. The contract that followed was the start of her career as an actress. Appearing in many Spanish television shows and music clips, which opened the doors for big screen appearances. Cruz appeared for the very first time on the big screen in El laberinto griego, after which she appeared in various Spanish movies.
Her international breakthrough came from starring alongside Johnny Depp in the movie Blow and besides Matt Damon in the movie All the Pretty Horses. This put her on the map as an international actress and she has been in high demand ever since.
In Captain Corelli's Mandolin she plays Pelagia, daughter of Dr Iannis. At first she starts a romantic relationship with Mandras, but falls for Captain Antonio Corelli at a later stage.
John Hurt
Born in Derbyshire, England on January 22nd 1940 John Hurt attended Art school after which he enrolled at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. His first onscreen appearance happened in 1962 in a supporting role in the move The Wild and the Willing. Since then Hurt has appeared in several plays, television productions and movies, gaining respect with plays like Macbeth and movies like Little Malcolm. While his work as a movie actor generated its fair share of success, it was television that provided the breakthrough for his role as Quentin Crisp in The Naked Civil Servant, which gained him an Emmy award. Since that time he has been in high demand and starred in several movies on TV, and in big screen productions like his outstanding performance in Midnight Express. After this he appeared in the Sci-fi classic Alien. Hurt has starred in many movies since, and continues to star in them to this day.
In Captain Corelli's Mandolin he plays Dr Iannis, a respected yet unlicensed doctor, who practices his skill on the Island, be it in an unofficial capacity. He has the thanks and respect of the local population, but is regarded as being a little eccentric.

In Captain Corelli's Mandolin he plays Mandras, a fisherman deeply in love with Pelagia. Their love is destined to fail as he sets off to fight in the war.
