The soundtrack for Captain Corelli's Mandolin was composed by Stephen Warbeck, whose presence on the music composing scene may not be a long one, but certainly a memorable one.
Being the composer for the soundtrack of the movie Shakespeare in Love, for which he was awarded an Oscar, helped pave the way for other scores like Mrs. Brown and Charlotte Gray.
For Captain Corelli's Mandolin, the obvious mandolins inspired by the title of the story are used quite naturally, and Warbeck makes good use of Italian singer La Donna e Mobile. The soundtrack also contains a track called "Pelagia's Song" which is an obvious love song and the theme song for the movie was performed by Russell Watson. Warbeck's score for Captain Corelli's Mandolin is one full of Mediterranean influences and focuses on Pelagia's Song.
During Warbeck's previous partnership with John Madden he had actually completed large parts of the score before the actual shooting of the movie started. This enabled him to edit the film to its music, resulting in a close partnership between soundtrack and drama, enabling those who only know the novel to associate their memories of it to the tracks.
Obviously, because of its title, mandolins are the heart of the soundtrack, delicately executed by Giovanni Parricelli. The tracks breathe the Italian passion for love and the tracks will also be pleasing for those that enjoy the soundtrack The Godfather, or the works of Ennio Morricone. By delivering the soundtrack for Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Warbeck once again shows us why he is regarded as one of today’s finest music composers in movies.
